Section 35 A Court Ordered Treatment: A petition for “the procedure for Commitment of Substance Abusers,” which allows family members concerned for the health and safety of their addicted relative to go to court's clinic and present the severity of the issue. If the court deems that the individual is in serious danger of hurting themselves or others, they will mandate that person to substance treatment, legally for 30 days. *This is an involuntary placement: Men sent to Brockton and Bridgewater — Women sent to Jamaica Plain, New Bedford, or Taunton.

MA Bar Association – Section 35: Attorney volunteers can offer assistance with Section 35 filings (MA law that permits individuals to petition the courts to involuntarily commit an individual who puts themselves or other at risk due to their substance use). The individual can be sent to a treatment program for up to 90 days if a judge determines, following a hearing and a review of medical evidence, that there is a “likelihood of serious harm” to themselves or others.
